Leicester Tigers v RC Toulon

When: Sunday, 07 December 2014 @ 23:30 (FINISHED)
Where: Welford Road
Our final pick of the weekend’s European Champions Cup action sees tournament favourites RC Toulon travel to Welford Road to face a Leicester Tigers side locked on four points with Llanelli Scarlets, but currently languishing third in Pool 3 courtesy of their Round 2 defeat.

With that in mind, it hardly comes as a surprise that the Tigers go into the game on Sunday evening as 8/5 underdogs for victory and they will be acutely aware that anything less than a win will leave the door wide open for the Welsh club to strengthen their position against winless Ulster.

Unfortunately for Leicester, they face a Toulon side looking to underline their status as kings of European rugby by maintaining their 100% record in Pool 3. True, the 2013 and 2014 Heineken Cup champions were not at their best in their opening game against Scarlets, but they hit their stride in the 23-13 defeat of Ulster in Round 2 with a devastating performance that will no doubt have left bookies feeling pretty secure in their 2/1 projections on the French side ultimately lifting the cup.

Of particular concern for the hosts will be the performances of brothers Steffon and Delon Armitage – who scored key tries in the first and second rounds respectively – and the unerring accuracy of Leigh Halfpenny, who has kicked 13 points in each game so far. With four tries and 33 points against already, it is therefore hard to see Leicester keeping the visitors at bay – especially if they succumb to the same individual errors that saw them hand the game to Scarlets in the previous round.

All in all then, it makes for pretty grim reading for Tigers fans ahead of their crunch Pool 3 match – and with a further game against Toulon to follow, a runner-up berth is anything but a formality.
